My Discovery task!

In health we were given a task where we got to pick our own topic to research about. I chose Cannabis as it is something that I wanted to learn more about, I wanted to learn about the positives and negatives.

Firstly I had to decide what I was doing for my 5 BIG QUESTIONS, I chose Why… is it harmful to your body? What… Other issues does this link with? Who… is algebal to access weed? How….. Does weed lead to poor mental health outcomes? When…. Should you get help?

Once I had my 5 big questions answered I moved onto figuring out three strategy's to help you quit cannabis. For my three strategy's I had to include what the strategy's were, what areas of well being the strategy's will help improve and are the strategy's short term or long term.

After this I got to chose what I was going to create to show my learning. I chose to make a poster, personally I like to make posters on paper because it almost helps me fully understand what I have just learnt, and I also get to make it really pretty.

My reflection: I did find it really challenging in the beginning as I missed the first 2 weeks that we had to complete our discovery task, so I did have to work at home to catch up with everyone else. I worked well with others in my class, I did not distract anyone from their work. I am really proud of how I managed to still complete the task even though I only had 4 class periods to do it.
Please if you have any feedback let me know :)

Impulse buying, what is it and why do we do it?

 Impulse buying

In Business studies we have been learning about impulse buying, why we do it and what the affects of it are. For this topic I have made a brochure with information about impulse buying on it.

Reflection: I liked learning about impulse buying because it made me more aware of it, and made me realise that at time I have impulse bought something and then later on had no use for it. This topic also gave me strategies on how to stop impulse buying.
Another personal reflection is next time I would manage my time better to get my DLO and post done and be able to fine a good website to create a brochure on as it was a bit difficult to fine one.
Have you ever found yourself Impulse buying? let me know in the comments.

Volcano Project.

Aim: to make and erupt a volcano via chemical reaction.

Hypothesis: I think the volcano will erupt when we mix the chemicals.

Equipment: Our Volcano, Baking soda, vinegar, food colouring, dish washinghjuj  liquid

Method: Make a volcano, paint the volcano, make the volcano erupt, clean up after.

  • warm water
  • liquid dishwashing detergent
  • red or orange food colouring
  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  1. Pour warm water into the volcano until it is 1/2 to 3/4 of the way full.
  2. Add several drops of food colouring.
  3. Add a squirt of detergent. This helps the ‘lava’ foam up and flow.
  4. Add a couple of spoonfuls of baking soda.
  5. When you are ready to start the eruption, pour vinegar into your volcano.
  6. You can recharge the volcano with more baking soda and vinegar.

Note: If you don’t have vinegar, you can use another acidic liquid, like lemon juice or orange juice.

the hydrogen ions in the vinegar react with the sodium and bicarbonate ions in the baking soda. the chemicals release carbon dioxide. This makes the reaction bubble and expand, just like when you shake up a can of soda and open it!

Banking key works

In business studies we are learning about banking. in today's lesson our teacher let us choose what DLO we wanted to do, I chose to make a crossword with the key words about banking and the clues I used should have shown my understanding of the words.

I did really like this activity as it gave a more creative side to learning about banking. And because it was a crossword it is also interactive so my class mates could give my crossword a go to test their knowledge too.
If you have any questions or feedback please let me know:)

Writing SEXXYY paragraphs

LO: learning to write SEXXYY paragraphs.

Essay question: ‘Describe an incident which changes the course of events in the text. Explain how this helped you to understand an important idea in the text’

Statement

Example/Evidence (include a quote)

EXplain quote

EXplain Effect on the Reader

Your link -- to another part of the text

Your link -- to the wider world

The incident of Binta being killed by Saran helped me to understand the important idea of How much hate saran really had towards the maji because it showed me that Saran was willing to kill his daughters best friend just because she was a magi.

We see this in the text when King Saran gets Binta to touch the scroll so he can see if she has magic in her or not. When Bintas hands filled with light from magic Saran just smashed his sword right through her with not even the slightest amount of remorse  for her. ‘Father strikes fast. One minute Binta stands, in the next fathers sward plunges through her chest’

This means that… Clearly we can tell in the quote that Amaris father, king Saran kills Binta because light exploded from bintas hands when she touched the scroll, magic.

This made the reader feel upset or scared for Amari and Binta because King Saran is capable of taking someone's life so fast over magic.

It reminded me of another important part in the book when King Saran carved maggot into zelies back with no remorse for how she is feeling and her screams because this also shows the idea of hatred towards magi as zelie was a magi too.

In the real world, this idea is important because we see this in the real world everyday but mainly in america at the moment with everything going on with racism and the BLM movement with police brutality.

Market day reflection.

On Wednesday 23 of September we held a market day at Hornby high school. I was in a different group right up until three weeks before market day when I had to switch groups last minute that made it a bit more difficult on market day. My group sold panikeke, we were supposed to sell chips as well but our deep fryer fell threw last minute. Our weaknesses were: poor communication, lack of effort and being unorganised. One strength our group had was me and another person jumped into the group three weeks before market day so our group had to adapt to more people.

Adapting fast - I was very impressed of the fact that we did pretty well considering that we didn't work together in the start.

Poor communication - We had poor communication because we didn't really talk about our plan for market day or who was bringing what. we also didn't really talk on the day about who was staying at the stand for what times so I ended up staying by the stand for the whole day selling things. I think next time to work on this we would need to either have a group chat of all the members or actually talk about things before and on the day.

Lack of effort - On the day we only had 3/5 members actually show up. Even tho I only jumped into the group three weeks before market day I still tired my best. I do think that everyone in the group could have done better on the day and actually work as a group instead of just one person doing everything. Next time I think we could all try a bit harder and work together.

Being unorganised - on the day we didn't have any of the stuff we needed other then the pre made panikeke. we didn't have paper plates, napkins or a poster to put on the table to display what we were selling. I think next time we should be more organised and be better prepared for the day.

Children of blood and bone: chapter 66

Father stands in his night robes, scanning a faded map. No sign of hatred. Not even a hint of disgust.

For him, carving MAGGOT into a girl’s back is just another day’s work.

In that instant it hits me: Zulaikha’s death. Zélie’s screams. They don’t mean a thing to him. Because they’re maji, they’re nothing.
Think about how the word ‘maggot’ is used. This is a slur. Do we have these in real life?

The Rube Goldberg Machine

This is the Goldberg device that our class made, we each were in a group of four and we had to come up with our own parts of the Goldberg device and then we joined them all up at the end.

My group made the first part of the Goldberg device, Austin made air pump to push Thomas lever up, I made a tunnel for the ball to flow trough out of Popsicle sticks.

Children of blood and bone: Chapter 59

“How will me coming back to Lagos solve any of that?” I ask. “As we speak, your father calls for my head!”

“My father’s scared.” Inan shakes his head. “He’s misguided, but his fear is justified. All the monarchy’s ever seen is the destruction maji can bring. They’ve never experienced anything like this.” He gestures to the camp, face alight with so much hope his smile practically glows in the darkness. “Zulaikha created this in one moon, and there are already more diviners in Lagos than anywhere else in Orïsha. Just imagine what we could accomplish with the resources of the monarchy behind us.”
This reminds me of the time it takes to trust people again. As we can tell the royals are scared of what the Maji can do because in the past the Maji has caused harm but now they are good and just want to be free and be able to use magic for good. I think this will turn out perfect as long as the Maji use their magic for good and don't use it against people.

Children of blood and bone: Chapter 56 response

We zip through the crowd while celebrants thrust and shimmy by our sides. Though part of me wants to cry, I crane my neck to take in the crowd, craving their joy, their life.

The children of Orïsha dance like there’s no tomorrow, each step praising the gods. Their mouths glorify the rapture of liberation, their hearts sing the Yoruba songs of freedom. My ears dance at the words of my language, words I once thought I’d never hear outside my head. They seem to light up the air with their delight.
It’s like the whole world can breathe again.
This reminds me of the time I went to a lights show in town and there was so much joy in the air and there were so many people coming together and singing and dancing, it's so beautiful.

Social Studies easy: technology and change

Technology and change: Rome

Over the last few weeks in social studies we have been working in groups about different time periods and the technological advancements that they had.

Question: Explain a technology period you have studied and what some of the important inventions were in this period.

Throughout the Rome time period there were a few technological advancements. Some of the inventions were Aqueducts, roads and Rome baths. The invention of these times are still seen today in everyday life.

An Important advancement in the Rome period was the Aqueducts. Aqueducts were invented around 312BC. Aqueducts are important because they help keep drinking water free from human waste and keep other contaminants out of the water. They also transported fresh and clean water to highly populated areas. So without the aqueducts there would not have been freshwater available to small communities.

Another advantage of the Romans were their roads. The Roman roads were made around 312BC. Their roads were important because they connected communities and cities, without them the Romans wouldn't  have conquered and held onto all of their territories and land. They also provide hundreds of today's routes in europe.

Without the Romans roads even life in europe today would be difficult.

The last important invention was the Roman Baths. The Roman baths were invented around 33BC. They provided a place where people of all classes and backgrounds could come together and socialize, get clean and bond. Although the baths were inspired by the ancient greeks they are commonly known for being a roman thing.

Without the roman baths the lower classes would not have been able to clean them selfs in sanitary conditions.

The roman era showed many technological advancements. These inventions were Aqueducts, Roman roads and Roman Baths, without them life would've been much more difficult. All of the inventions are seen around the world in today's times and are still very important.

Children of blood and bone: chapter 45

“Your people, your guards. They’re nothing more than killers, rapists and thieves. The only difference between them and criminals is the uniforms they wear.”

This sadly reminds me of how some countries are, that their police systems are just as bad a everyday criminals and that they break their own laws everyday. It also reminds me of the police brutality going on everywhere and all the protects and movements that are happening .

Children of blood and bone: chapter 43

Now it takes everything to gain control. No matter how hard I fight, the risk of feeling Zélie’s pain lingers. A constant and growing threat.

A message I take from this is that Inan is so afraid of zelie seeing that he knows his kingdom is corrupt and that what they are doing is wrong, that his father is a bad guy.

My past 6 weeks in art.

Learning Objective: In art over the last 6 weeks we have been learning about different painting techniques. These techniques that we have worked on are working with different textures (ex. scrunched up paper towels, bits of cardboard, torn off bits of paper and big paint brushes), We have been mixing different oils (ex. cooking oil, Retarder) and also using techniques like blending and layering.

In my art work I tried to step out of my comfort zone of keeping everything very neat and tidy. So over the past 6 weeks I have just been putting my paint brush on the paper and go for it.
This was slightly challenging for me because it was way out of my comfort zone with just going for it, as a result of just going crazy I don't love all my art work but I still see it as development in my art.

Here are the pictures of the art techniques that our teacher asked us to use for our own art.

If anybody has any feedback or tips please leave a comment and let me know:)

Children of blood and bone: chapter 22.

I pause for a moment, aghast at the number of them filling the narrow path. Before today, I caught only glimpses of the laborers brought in to staff the palace—always pleasant, clean, groomed to Mother’s satisfaction. Like Binta, I thought they lived simple lives, safe within the palace walls. I never considered where they came from, where else they might have ended up,

“Skies…” It’s almost too hard to bear the sight. Mostly diviners, the laborers outnumber the villagers by hordes, dressed in nothing but tattered rags. Their dark skin blisters under the scorching sun, marred by the dirt and sand seemingly burned into their beings. Each is hardly more than a walking skeleton.
A real life situation this could be compared to is people who live in lower areas, you see what they look like at school or work but you never consider where they could from or what life is like in there homes.

What I wonder is if later on in the book this changes, if the laborers get to live in better conditions and get better clothes.

Children of blood and bone: chapter 3.

Chapter 3 – Amari
“I am afraid not, Your Highness. I saw it with my own eyes. Their magic was weak, but it was there.”
Skies…
What does this mean for us? What shall happen to the monarchy? Are the maji already planning an attack? Will we have any chance of fighting back?
Memories of Father before the Raid play in my head, a paranoid man with grinding teeth and forever greying hair. The man who forced Inan and me into the palace cellar, placing swords in our hands though we were far too young and weak to lift them.
The maji will come for you, he warned. The same words every time he forced us to spar. When they do, you must be prepared.
A message I take from this scene is: Her father has always been afraid of the maji and what they could do, so he has made is own children train to 'be ready' because he is afraid of what they will do, afraid of their power.

I wonder what is going to happen next, I wonder who will win.

Children of blood and bone: chapter 2.

Chapter 2 – Zélie
“It’s a diviner tax.” I grip the draped fabric of my pants, still haunted by the guard’s touch. “They came for Mama Agba, too. Probably hitting every home in Ilorin.”
Tzain presses his fists to his forehead as if he could smash through his own skull. He wants to believe that playing by the monarchy’s rules will keep us safe, but nothing can protect us when those rules are rooted in hate.

This can be compared to today world with all of the racism, and the unfair treatment of people of colour and how they are under pained and treated extremely different just like how the diviners are treated by everyone else.

How electricity works in my phone.

"a cell phone is essentially a two-way radio, consisting of a radio transmitter and a radio receiver. When you chat with your friend on your cell phone, your phone converts your voice into an electrical signal, which is then transmitted via radio waves to the nearest cell tower."
It uses electricity from the wall outlet, the battery, the WiFi, the speaker. Apple iPhone 4 Diagram - AT&T Device Support

I am singing for my performance because its easier than learning a song on a instrument.
The song I'm doing is how far i'll go from the movie moana because I know the song well and loved the movie.
I am doing option one which is preforming in front of the class because I am second semester music and NCEA music next year.

Science experiment.Making salts.

step 1. add 20ml of sulfuric acid to a beaker and heat it until it steams and then dissolved the copper oxide in it, the solution turned blue.

step 2. put it through filter paper.

step 3. then we put it in a evaporator basin.

step 4. we put water in a beaker and put it under the evaporator basin and boiled it.

step 5. watch the crystals form.
We made copper salfate

How it acid rain formed? Fossil fuels mixing with clouds.
How is acid rain effecting coral reefs? Coral Reefs in Acidic Waters. Increasing amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere from burning of fossil fuels. ... As seawater gets more acidic with more carbon dioxide dissolved in it, these creatures might have a harder time making their skeletons and shells.
How can we prevent it? lessen fossile fuels going into the air.

Close up techniques

I was in a group with Rykin and Brayden. I was the writer and Rykin was the learder.

The close up shot was used effectively to show the intensity of the shot. We see the guard and geel pett and the weapon. The director used this shot to show the fear in Geel Piet eyes and the anger in the guards eyes. This shot made the audience feel empathy for Geel piet because we could see the fear in his eyes. In this shot we see the imbalance of power between the guard and Geel Piet which is something we see later on in the film.

Blue markers are the areas Iv'e lived in :)
The first screenshot is all the places Iv'e lived and the second screenshot is a close up of the areas in Canterbury.
Most of my moves were just simply moving houses but 3 of them were due to earthquakes. And yes I know I have moved around a lot.
List is in order of first area I lived in to the latest area.

Bullying.

  1. Why Do Some People Bully? In some cases kids are lacking attention and are seeking attention, they don't care if its negative or positive attention. They could have picked up/ learnt these bullying ways by watching a role models act this way.
  2. Why Are Some People More Likely to be Bullied? Because they don't fit into the 'mainstream' that is considered normal (eg: gender identity, sexual orientation, culture, religion and believes).
  3. Why is Bullying Harmful? It can servery effect peoples mental health, they could be more likely develop symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  4. What Can You Do if You Are Being Bullied? Talk to teachers at school, they are their to help you. Go to some online websites. Free text or calling to youth helplines.
  5. What Can You Do if You See Someone Else Being Bullied? Report it to a trusted adult.
