Shakespeare act 1

Act One, Scene One:

1. Antonio is depressed without knowing why. What two possible reasons do his friends suggest? 1. because his ships are out at sea. 2. That he is just sad.
2. Do you think Gratiano’s contributions help Antonio’s mood? In my opinion no, he was very harsh in the way of telling him to be happy.
3. What are your first impressions of Bassanio? sassy and honest.
4. Is he in love? no, he just wants money.
5. Why does he need to borrow money again now? to get the girl.

Act One, Scene Two

1. How do Portia’s first words compare with Antonio’s? she is tired not sad.
2. What is the reason for her mood? all the men are after her and her father has arranged a marriage for her and she doesn't get to pick her husband
3. Do you think Nerissa is a help to her? I think Nerissa is trying to help her but in a way she won't accept the help.
4. Sum up, in a word or a short phrase, Portia’s attitude to her suitors so far. basically just a huge complainer.

Act one, scene three

1. Shylock is a moneylender. Does he seem eager to do business with Bassanio? How do you know? Not at the start because of the the things he has done to him
2. Which does Shylock think is safe, his business or Antonio’s? Why? His buisness because he doesnt have to worry about his boats
3. Why doesn’t Shylock want to dine with Bassanio and Antonio? Cause he is a jew and they dont eat pork
4. What strict principal of his is Antonio breaking to help Bassanio? His no intrest charge rule
5. Shylock tells a bible story to prove that the taking of profit is blessed, as long as thieving is not involved. Does he convince Antonio? Give evidence. Becayse in the end he was fine with it
6. Shylock accuses Antonio of a whole catalogue of nastiness. How does Antonio answer the charges? He said he would do it again
7. How does Bassanio react to the proposed bond? He doesnt want it to happen because he is doing it for him and he could die
